What makes this airplane So Different?
At first glance, you may not notice anything unusual. With 9 seats in Business Class and 85 seats in Economy Class, the E190 has the same two-cabin configuration found on LAM’s Boeing 737s. Most travellers familiar with large, single-aisle aircraft are accustomed to rows with six abreast seating in a 3+3 layout. However, on the E190, you won’t find any middle seats. Because there are only four seats per row, everyone gets either an aisle or window seat, and that makes for a much more comfortable in-flight experience. This is just one of the features of the E190 that distinguishes it from other aircraft of similar capacity.
When Embraer set out to build a family of new airplanes for the 21st century, its engineering and marketing teams met with forty prospective airlines to understand what they wanted in a new-generation airliner. Both passenger comfort and operating efficiency were at the top of their lists. Embraer began to design the airliner from the inside out, starting with a clean sheet of paper, or more accurately, with computer keyboards, screens, goggles, and gloves.
Maximizing your personal space
Step aboard LAM’s new E190 and you will experience a remarkable feeling of spaciousness. Not only is the height of the cabin a tall two meters, but large windows let in lots of natural light to further enhance interior roominess.
Seat and aircraft width are important, too. A clean design approach enabled Embraer engineers to build the new airplane family based on a “double-bubble” cross-section. While not a new concept, the idea of introducing a fuselage shape derived from vertically overlapping two circles was a first on an aircraft family of this size.
The widest point of the upper circle, which forms the main cabin, is at elbow level when passengers are seated. This maximizes personal space and allows the installation of wider seats and even a wider aisle than you will find on larger jets.
The width of the lower circle is greatest near the cabin floor level which increases baggage and cargo capacity.
A smooth flight - By design
A clean sheet airplane project goes beyond just the cabin. Traditional aircraft designs employed a series of pulleys and cables to move flight control systems. On the E190, that complex architecture has been replaced by fly-by-wire technology which uses electrical impulses to adjust flap settings as well as aircraft pitch and yaw.
On the flight deck, crews operate the E190 from an all-glass cockpit featuring five screens which display all on board systems, navigation, weather and flight information. There is even a track-ball cursor control device on the console, similar to what you would find on a laptop computer, to simplify data input and movement between screens.
It all adds up to an aircraft that is easy to handle yet exceptionally responsive to pilot commands.
The Boeing 737-500 is the advanced and modern version of the B737-200 that LAM did phase out. Is acclaimed for being more economical in terms of fuel consumption, and offer more places, configured to offer 99 economy class and 12 in business class.
Through its subsidiary MEX-Mozambique Express, LAM operates two (3) Bombardier Q400’s, which are equipped with state-of-the-art technology. They operate silently (using the modern and efficient NVS - Noise and Vibration Suppression System) and are more environmentally friendly. They are modern turbo- helix airplanes with a capacity of seventy two (72) passengers in Economy Class.
